During times of sickness and injury, patients need someone who can provide spiritual and emotional support. You can provide that help.
 

As a chaplain intern at Carle Foundation Hospital – a Level 1 Trauma Center – you’ll find many opportunities to make a real impact on the lives of patients, families and staff. Together with our staff chaplains, you’ll work with critical and non-critical patients alike in a variety of departments, including Neonatal ICU, Cardiology and Oncology. Plus, you’ll develop the skills and understanding you need for your ministry, whether you serve in a hospital, university or church.

A Team Approach

Carle offers a unique opportunity for CPE students to hone their pastoral skills in a supportive environment. The Hospital’s Pastoral Care Department has a director and four staff chaplain positions. Staff chaplains work directly with interns throughout the course of the program. Students will also work closely with staff in a variety of hospital departments, including Pediatrics, Surgery and Internal Medicine, just to name a few.

Course Work

Our CPE combines classroom and hands-on learning. While at Carle, students will participate in educational experiences such as:

• Seminars on topics ranging from crisis intervention to family dynamics

• Peer group discussions

• Case presentations

Students will also work one-on-one with patients and family members. These duties include:

• Crisis counseling

• Responding to traumas, medical emergencies and codes

• Prayer and support

• Help in coping with loss

Student Support

We want you to have the best possible experience at Carle. While an intern, you’ll have access to:

Summer Program

Carle’s summer program runs from late May through mid-August. Students meet daily, with morning seminars Tuesday through Friday, and have on-call responsibilities.

Carle Foundation Hospital welcomes applications from international students. Evidence of a visa that allows participation in CPE is required. F-1, B-1, and R visas may be valid for participation, however certain limitations may apply. The Clinical Pastoral Education Program at Carle Foundation Hospital will not involve itself in the application for a visa.
