Education HSPP Updated April 2008
Requirements Principal Investigators and their key research personnel must have initial education in the ethical conduct of human subject research, HIPAA, and conflict of interest. Continuing education is required every 2 years. Documentation of this training must be on file in Carle’s Human Subject Protection Program before the study will receive IRB approval. This applies to new projects and to ongoing projects at the time of IRB annual review. Documentation of training should be submitted to: Carle CITI Administrator, Pam Woo, (217) 326-4508, Research@Carle.com
Initial education: The initial educational requirement should be met by registering as a Carle Foundation Hospital affiliate and completing the basic bio-medical CITI initial training module plus one elective at the CITI website. Depending upon your level of experience with the subject matter, course completion will take between 3 and 6 hours.
Exception: If you can demonstrate completion within the last two years of human subject protection training equivalent to the initial training requirements, you may seek a waiver of this requirement. To request a waiver, present the training curriculum (or a method for accessing the curriculum such as the training website) and certificate of completion to the HSPP Director, Nancy Hathaway, at nancy.hathaway@carle.org.
Continuing Education: Once initial training requirements are met, investigators and key research personnel must complete 3 hours of continuing education in human subject protection every 2 years. The continuing educational requirement can be met by registering as a Carle Foundation Hospital affiliate and completing the CITI refresher modules plus five electives at the CITI webpage.
